What is permitted development?

Permitted Development rights allow certain types of work to be done without acquiring full planning permission.

“So you mean I can build a house without notifying the council?!”

…not quite

However, we can still do some pretty cool projects under permitted development. It’s not as simple as a quick sketch and laying the bricks. But it does make certain projects simpler.

Permitted development was put in place to make councils lives easier and also to allow the typical home owner to be able to extend what they have without all the complications of full planning applications.

This meant a set of rules were created and aslong as your project falls within those rules we can build your extension under permitted development.

Here are the categories that can fall under PD rights:

Class A: Rear and side extensions
Class B: Roof enlargements
Class C: Other roof work, e.g. re-roofing
Class D: Front extensions, e.g. porch
Class E: Outbuildings, e.g. garden room
Class F: Hard surface surrounds, e.g. driveway
Class G: Alterations to chimneys, vents, etc
Class H: Antennae, e.g. satellite dishes

(?) Did you know? Different elements of a project will each require a separate proposal, and these can be a mix of types, e.g. Permitted Development for a loft conversion and full planning for a double-storey extension.
